Media groups challenge privacy law amid negotiations with I&B Minister
A coalition of 21 major Indian news publishers has formally petitioned the Supreme Court to challenge the nation's new digital privacy law. The media consortium, which includes prominent networks like Mukesh Ambani's Network18 and Gautam Adani's NDTV, argues that the legislation lacks critical exemptions for working journalists. Publishers warn that the law's strict consent requirements could severely hamper investigative journalism, endanger confidential sources, and empower influential individuals to demand the erasure of factual reporting.
While the top court prepares to examine these contentious provisions, critical negotiations are simultaneously ongoing to resolve the standoff. High-level discussions are actively underway between media representatives, the Information and Broadcasting Minister, and key figures including Nishikant Dubey, seeking a workable balance between fundamental privacy rights and a free press.
